Patient Instructions

Please contact our office if you are taking Coumadin, Persantine, Ticlid, Plavix, Aspirin or other blood thinners. If you are not sure if the medication you take is a blood thinner, please call your pharmacist. Certain blood thinners must be stopped prior to your procedure.

Instructions for Patients Having EGD

  • Morning EGDs: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the day before your EGD. Afternoon EGDs: Nothing to eat or drink at least 6 hours before your EGD.
  • Take your regular medications the morning of your EGD with just a sip of water. If you are diabetic, only take ½ of your normal dose of insulin.
  • You must have a driver with you. You will receive medication that will make you sleepy and forgetful, so you will not be allowed to drive yourself home.
  • You will not be able to return to work the day of your EGD. If you need a work excuse we can provide you with that at the time you check out.
  • Please contact our office if you are taking Coumadin, Persantine, Ticlid, Plavix, Aspirin or other blood thinners. If you are not sure if the medication you take is a blood thinner, please call us or your pharmacist. Certain blood thinners must be stopped prior to your procedure. If you have been advised by your physician or surgeon to never discontinue your Coumadin; let us know and we will talk with your physician.
  • Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment time.
  • If you have an artificial heart valve or require antibiotics prior to treatment, please let us know so we can treat you accordingly.
  • Please remove all jewelry and valuables before entering The Endoscopy Center.
  • If you wear dentures, please be prepared to remove them before your procedure. You may keep them in place until the nurse advises you to remove them.

Instructions for Patients Having Colonoscopy

Please contact our office if you are taking Coumadin, Persantine, Ticlid, Plavix, Aspirin or other blood thinners. If you are not sure if the medication you take is a blood thinner, please call your pharmacist. Certain blood thinners must be stopped prior to your procedure.

  • Do not eat fruits, vegetables, nuts or dairy products two days before your procedure. You may have meat and bread without seeds.
  • On the day before your procedure, you may only have clear liquids. Examples: black coffee, tea, soft drinks, beef or chicken broth, Jell-O and Popsicle’s (except orange or red).
  • You may have clear liquids up until 2 hours prior to your procedure.
  • At noon on the day before your appointment, take 4 Dulcolax tablets by mouth. Do no chew or crush. Do not take tablets within one hour of taking an antacid.
  • At your first bowel movement, which can occur within 1 to 6 hours after taking the Dulcolax tablets, begin drinking the bowel prep solution. Drink 8 oz. every 10 to 15 minutes until you have finished half of the gallon jug. It is not necessary to drink the entire gallon if you have taken the 4 Dulcolax tablets as directed.
  • You may start your prep at any time on the day before your appointment, as long as you are finished with the entire gallon before bedtime. We recommend you start in the morning.
  • Please take your regular medication (except for blood thinners) the morning of your procedure. If you are diabetic, only take ½ of your normal dose of insulin.
  • Never come alone; you will not be able to drive home. You will not be given sedating medication if you do not have someone to drive you home. Please ask your driver not to leave the office during your procedure. If they must leave, they must furnish a number where they can be reached.
  • Bring all of your regular medications in their original containers to review with our nurses.
  • Please leave all jewelry and valuables at home.
